Playa Phone – smart phone booth at Burning Man
An innovative phone booth called Playa Phone is operating at Burning Man in Nevada at the corner of 3:30 and Ceiba, available for free public use with five-minute calls anywhere in the world. The booth is an ordinary phone booth with modified internals that enables calling over the Internet rather than traditional phone lines and removes coin payment mechanisms.
Interesting idea connecting a classic element with modern technology at one of the most extravagant desert events. I like the social aspect too — anyone can call the booth's phone number and chat with people at the event.
What is Playa Phone and how does it work at Burning Man?
Playa Phone is a modified phone booth located at the intersection of 3:30 and Ceiba in Black Rock City, Nevada that operates via Internet connection instead of traditional phone lines. The internals of an ordinary booth were replaced to eliminate coin collection and enable VoIP calling.
Is there a cost to use Playa Phone and what are the call limits?
Playa Phone is free to use with calls limited to five minutes per connection. Callers can reach almost anywhere in the world, whether contacting known contacts or random people at the festival.
What happens when the phone booth is busy or nobody answers?
If the booth is in use, callers receive a busy signal. If the phone rings six times and disconnects, it means nobody answered. Due to high usage, multiple attempts may be necessary to connect.
