Google Play introduces memory reduction requirements and code optimization standards
Google Play is introducing new app quality requirements focused on reducing memory footprint and code optimization. Starting February 2027, developers must meet new thresholds for dynamic memory usage, bitmap memory, and DEX code optimization, supported by new monitoring tools in Play Console. Google is also implementing the Zero-Tap Sign-In standard, requiring apps to automatically restore user sign-in when switching to a new Android device.
A fairly elegant solution to the ongoing memory crisis. If app memory demands are reduced, it will indirectly ease the shortage of memory chips as well. So the crisis turns out to be good for something. We'll end up with better optimized Android applications.
What are the main memory metrics targeted by Google Play's new requirements?
The new requirements cover three areas: dynamic memory (anonymous RSS + swap), bitmap memory, and DEX code optimization. Dynamic memory tracks an app's private data in both active and compressed states. Bitmap memory is measured in the foreground but should not be held long-term in background states. DEX code must be optimized with at least 25% coverage using tools like R8.
When will Google Play begin enforcing the new memory requirements?
Enforcement begins in February 2027. Apps and games failing to meet the new thresholds may experience reduced visibility and limited publishing capabilities on Google Play.
What new diagnostic tools does Google Play provide to developers?
Play Console now offers detailed memory metrics in Android vitals, new filters to identify crashes from memory pressure, detailed DEX code optimization insights, and proactive alerts when thresholds are exceeded. Additional tools including metrics on app state duration and Memory Limiter insights will be added later this year.
What is Zero-Tap Sign-In and when will it be mandatory?
Zero-Tap Sign-In is a standard requiring automatic restoration of user sign-in when switching to a new Android device using the Android Restore Credentials API. It becomes mandatory in April 2027 for apps supporting user sign-in to maintain full publishing capabilities on Google Play.
